Ystwyth CC report – round 17 – Heat, Hills and a new ladies course record

With five days left of the Tour de France and Geraint Thomas still in yellow, there should have been a shout out for all club participants to be wearing yellow for tonight’s TT.

Round  17 saw 13  riders register for the 22 mile hilly time trial, utilizing the Ystwyth CC road race circuit.  The riders would climb from Southgate to Devils Bridge before navigating to Ponterwyd and climbing up to the Nant yr Arian visitor centre. From here, a 7 mile technical, barrier free flat out descent would greet the riders to the finish line.
On a technical course, many brave riders would favour a road bike over a TT bike.
In the men’s event, Steffan Roberts blew the field apart showing strength and technical ability to take the win in a time of 55min 15sec.  Second place went to Kristian Bond in a time of 56min 24sec and third place to the club TT co-ordinator Andy Hunt in a time of 56min 41sec.
Five riders also went under the hour mark and a further six were under 70 minutes.
In the ladies event, Helen Marshall took the win in an excellent time of 1hr 3min 5sec setting a new course record, previously set in 2016 by Leah Brewer. Second place went to Anita Saycell in a time of 1 hour, 4 min, 5 seconds.
This is one of the toughest TT courses in the area and it was great to see the riders taking on the challenge.
Next week, the riders return to the 10 mile Llety Gwyn course for a 7pm start.
Thank you to all the marshals and time keepers for making this event possible.
